Syed Tahir Shahbaz , Wafaqi Mohtasib (Ombudsman) of Pakistan


Syed Tahir Shahbaz has taken oath on 21st July, 2017 as 7th regular Wafaqi Mohtasib (Ombudsman) of Pakistan. Prior to his appointment as Wafaqi Mohtasib, he was Secretary Establishment Division, Government of Pakistan. He has done his LL.M. from Karachi University and M.Sc. in Geology and LLB from Punjab University.  He was an officer of Pakistan Administrative Service (PAS).

        He has obtained different trainings at National and International levels. He joined Civil Services Academy, Lahore in October, 1983. From July, 1984 to March, 1985, he participated in Specialized Training Program at the Civil Services Academy. In February, 2001, he joined University of Tokyo–Japan for Localizing Environmental Action (Bringing Together Local Governments and Urban Stakeholders in the Asia Pacific Region) program, under the United Nations. He joined National Institute of Public Administration (NIPA), Karachi for Advanced Course of Administration and Development from 12th March, 2001 to 2nd June, 2001.  He also attended a workshop on Green Productivity at Dambula,Srilanka from 22nd to 28th May, 2006.  He also joined Crown Agents International Management Centre, Worthing, United Kingdom (UK) for Managing Strategic Change (4th to 15th December, 2006).

       He has vast experience of working in both Provincial and Federal Government.  He served as Registrar Supreme Court of Pakistan from March, 2014 to January, 2016. At Federal level, he also served as Additional Secretary, Cabinet Division; Chairman Capital Development Authority (CDA); Joint Secretary, Establishment Division; M/o Industries, Production; and M/o Law, Justice and Human Rights. He also worked as Senior Advisor with UNDP from February, 2009 to February, 2010.  

            At provincial level, he was the Secretary Industries Government of Punjab; Executive District Officer Karachi; Additional Secretary Home, Government of Sindh, District Coordination Officer, Shikarpur; Executive District Officer, Community Development, City District Government – Karachi; Financial Advisor, Karachi Metropolitan Corporation – Karachi. 

            He served as Deputy Commissioner, Okara for about 3 years. Additional Commissioner Coordination, Lahore; Deputy Secretary (General) Home Department, Government of Punjab; Deputy Secretary, Chief Minister’s Secretariat, Government of Punjab; Section Officer, Finance Department, Government of  Punjab; Assistant Commissioner, Sadiqabad and Shakargarh and from March, 1985 to June, 1986 as Assistant Commissioner (UT) Gujrat.



  He is also the President of the Asian Ombudsman Association (AOA).
